Autobiography in 5 Chapters (original post at twolfblogspot.tumblr.com)

In all my life, training and experience, the most powerful and profound thing I have ever done for myself is to take 100% responsibility for my life. That means 100% responsibility for EVERYTHING.

When we take 100% responsibility for everything we think, say, do, create, support or allow – we gain 100% ABILITY to change the conditions of our lives, and to live in a state of authenticity, integrity, prosperity, and peace.

Now this doesn’t mean that I blame myself for the actions or behaviours of others, but it does mean
that I am 100% responsible for the way I choose to respond to each situation or event. I am 100% responsible for the way I choose to use my experiences to either re-create a situation, or to progressively inform my personal growth and learning, and move me closer to my personal truth and goals.

The extent to which this single choice can empower us in our lives is immeasurable.

While I have worked extensively with this principle as discussed by Jack Canfield in The Success Principles, and have great respect for his work, my journey into this practice actually began with a poem from “The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying” by Sogyal Rinpoche. The poem is called “Autobiography in 5 Chapters”. I keep a copy on hand as a reminder, and to share with people as often as I can. Here it is for you:

Autobiography in 5 Chapters

1) I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I fall in.

I am lost… I am hopeless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

2) I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I’m in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

3) I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I see it there.

I still fall in… it’s a habit

My eyes are open

I know where I am

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

4) I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I walk around it.

5) I walk down a different street.

Cheers,

Teron.
