Male Affection: A Photographic History Tour / The Art of Manliness

The idea that North American men are profoundly deprived of healthy, connective, non-sexual touch has been coming up a lot lately – with friends, colleagues, clients, and in the media.

I’m not talking about the standard back-slapping & perfunctory hugs most men are accustomed to here. I am talking about a whole other kind of touch. I’m talking about the kind of touch that is meant to create connection, bonding and comfort. I’m talking about the kind of touch that is lasting, and easy. I’m talking about the kind of touch that is pure, and loving, and not even remotely connected to sex or sexuality. I’m talking about the kind of touch that for most men, exists only with our kids or our partners…

Did you know that historically, men displayed the same kind of loving, intimate touch in friendship as our female counterparts?

Take a look at the photographs in this article: Male Affection: A Photographic History Tour / The Art of Manliness

Notice if these images make you uncomfortable or uneasy in any way. Notice whatever internal dialogue is going on in your head. Remember that this kind of intimacy was once the standard between men, including heterosexual men.

Ask yourself how it is that this kind of connection & ease has gone absent from our culture. Ask yourself how this loss of bonding & intimacy affects the men around you. Ask yourself how this loss affects you.

Ask yourself what this loss of intimacy has done to the male psyche… And how it affects women, families, communities, and the world as a result…

Take a good long look at the last two pictures in the article – the ones of the servicemen… Ask yourself how we got from there to here. Ask yourself where we are heading now. Ask yourself if that is where you want to be…
