The Confrontation Technique for Self-Mastery

proud and stillOn a call with a client today, this question arose:

“How do I overcome long-standing habits & behaviors that are no longer working for me, but seem to be deeply embedded in my consciousness?”.

One way to address this is by using something called the Confrontation Technique for Self-Mastery. I originally encountered this technique via Dr. Paul Leon Masters.

This technique can be used to help us overcome behaviours, thoughts, habits and even addictions that are causing us harm, impeding our success or growth, or are otherwise no longer useful to us.

The beauty of this technique is that it puts the power to change our lives exactly where it belongs – with us – in our very own mind, body, heart and spirit.

The Confrontation Technique is built on the premise that all that is un-evolved, harmful or lacking in the human experience is generated by a specific type of energy in the mind. This energy is a ‘weakness’ or ‘victim’ energy, and is the foundation upon which a ‘weakness’ habit or pattern is formed.

Each and every one of us is imbued with an innate, unlimited, perfection-oriented, energy or power that can be called upon to assist us in achieving self-mastery. We may have different names for this power-energy, depending on whether or not we subscribe to a particular religious or spiritual practice. We could also simply see it as the Self – perfected and free. For the purpose of this exercise, I will call this power-energy ‘the Universe’.

When we engage this power-energy in direct confrontation with the ‘weakness’ energy that is causing us to continue destructive patterns, we can gain greater mastery of our lives.

There are three simple prerequisites for this practice:

1. We must be sincerely committed to changing what isn’t working in our lives.

2. We must be sincerely committed to our own success and happiness.

3. We must sincerely trust that the limitless, healing, transformational power-energy of the universe within us is infinitely stronger than any temporal, ego based, or externally imposed ‘weakness’ energy in our mind, body, heart or spirit.

Once these prerequisites are in place, the Confrontation Technique for Self-Mastery can be applied to virtually ANYTHING – from overcoming fear, to becoming more productive, to mastering addictions, improving relationships, or anything else we want to improve in our lives.

Let’s say for example, that you are struggling with negative self-talk. This habit or pattern causes you to be self-defeating, self-destructive, self-sabotaging, and interferes with your progress in various aspects of your life. In using the Confrontation Technique, whenever you feel this ‘weakness’ energy trying to take over, you call upon the power-energy of the Universe within you, to go into direct confrontation with the ‘weakness’ energy that is driving the negative self-talk. Your call to power might look something like this:

“The power-energy of the Universe within me is far greater than the ‘weakness’ power causing me to think negative thoughts about myself. I fill my mind, body, heart and spirit with the power-energy of the Universe within me. The power-energy of the Universe within me cleanses my thoughts of all negativity and fills me with self-appreciation and love.”

While calling on the power-energy of the Universe within to directly confront the ‘weakness’ energy of the negative self-talk, try to connect deeply with this power. Try to feel it, to see it, to sense it in every possible way. Stay with this feeling until you no longer feel the influence of the ‘weakness’ energy in your mind. As your mind, body, heart and spirit are filled with the transformational power-energy of the Universe – the negative self-talk is erased. As soon as you feel the positive results, gives thanks to the power-energy of the Universe:

“I give thanks to the power of the Universe within me for giving me Self-Mastery.”

Of course, each of us will attune the specific wording of these affirmations to suit our personal situation, needs and belief systems. For example, someone of the Christian faith in direct confrontation with an  addiction might use a call to power such as:

“The power of God within me is greater than any power causing me to give in to this addiction. I fill my mind, body, heart and spirit with the power God within me. The power of God within me brings peace to my mind, body, heart and spirit, and fills me with the desire to stay clean, make good choices and live a healthy life.”

As for me, my call to power for today looks like this:

The power of the Universe within me is greater than any power causing me to procrastinate. I fill my mind, body, heart and spirit with the power of the universe within me. The power of the universe within me removes all barriers to productivity and success, and propels me steadily forward.

And now that I’ve finally completed this post, I can draw the day to a close with:

I give thanks to the power of the Universe within me for giving me Self-Mastery.

Peace,

Teron.
